Exact directions later I arrived at The Secret Surgery situated in car park D3 next to Midsummer Place in central Milton Keynes.

I was taken to the shopping centre for coffee and a warm up interview. I am not so sure whether it was to find out more information about me and my previous health issues and my work as a therapist or just to make me relaxed and happy before the interview with the famous TV doctor of BBC Breakfast News, Rosemary Leonard. Either way it was good fun!

Tern TV is producing a new 10 part series for Sky Real Lives entitled The Secret Guide to Women's Health. It is a studio based show discussing various aspects of women's health, hosted by Coleen Nolan and due for transmission early next year.
Within the studio format the show features some VT inserts. One of these is the Secret Surgery with Dr Rosemary Leonard.

Lights, camera, action... and I had a micrphone on, sitting comfortably chatting to this lovely lady doctor. I was made to feel so well at ease. I loved it! The cameras rolled for about 15 minutes and we mainly talked about ladies and the menopause. A subject not easy to discuss in public, but necessary for all ladies of a "certain age".

After the interview Rosemary an I chatted about life and her new love...

It was a fabulous experience. A lady developed a rash on her breast, similar to that of young mothers who are nursing.

Because her mammogram had been clear, the doctor treated her with antibiotics for infections. After 2 rounds, it continued to get worse, so her doctor sent her for another mammogram. This time it showed a mass.

A biopsy found a fast growing malignancy. Chemo was started in order to shrink the growth; then a mastectomy was performed; then a full round of Chemo; then radiation. After about 9 months of intense treatment, she was given a clean bill of health.

She had one year of living each day to its fullest. Then the cancer returned to the liver area. She took 4 treatments and decided that she wanted quality of life, not the after effects of Chemo. She had 5 great months and she planned each detail of the final days. After a few days of needing morphine, she died. She left this message to be delivered to women everywhere:

Women, PLEASE be alert to anything that is not normal, and be persistent in getting help as soon as possible.

Paget's Disease: This is a rare form of breast cancer, and is on the outside of the breast, on the nipple and aureole. It appeared as a rash, which later became a lesion with a crusty outer edge. I would not have ever suspected it to be breast cancer but it was. My nipple never seemed any different to me, but the rash bothered me, so I went to the doctor for that. Sometimes, it itched and was sore, but other than that it didn't bother me. It was just ugly and a nuisance, and could not be cleared up with all the creams prescribed by my doctor and dermatologist for the dermatitis on my eyes just prior to this outbreak. They seemed a little concerned but did not warn me it could be cancerous.

Now, I suspect not many women out there know a lesion or rash on the nipple or aureole can be breast cancer. (Mine started out as a single red pimple on the aureole. One of the biggest problems with Paget's disease of the nipple is that the symptoms appear to be harmless. It is frequently thought to be a skin inflammation or infection, leading to unfortunate delays in detection and care.)

What are the symptoms?

1. A persistent redness, oozing, and crusting of your nipple causing it to itch and burn (As I stated, mine did not itch or burn much, and had no oozing I was aware of, but it did have a crust along the outer edge on one side.)

2. A sore on your nipple that will not heal. (Mine was on the aureole area with a whitish thick looking area in center of nipple).

3. Usually only one nipple is effected. How is it diagnosed? Your doctor will do a physical exam and should suggest having a mammogram of both breasts, done immediately. Even though the redness, oozing and crusting closely resemble dermatitis (inflammation of the skin), your doctor should suspect cancer if the sore is only on one breast. Your doctor should order a biopsy of your sore to confirm what is going on.

This message should be taken seriously and passed on to as many of your relatives and friends as possible; it could save someone's life.

My breast cancer has spread and metastasized to my bones after receiving mega doses of chemotherapy, 28 treatments of radiation and taking Tamaxofin. If this had been diagnosed as breast cancer in the beginning, perhaps it would not have spread...

TO ALL READERS:

This is sad as women are not aware of Paget's disease. If, by passing this around, we can make others aware of it and its potential danger, we are helping women everywhere.

This information was sent to me by my friend Shirley

New Sign of a Stroke

STROKE:Remember the 1st Three Letters....S.T.R.
If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some lives.
Seriously...

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics)she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening

Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die, they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today.)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher..

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

www.agatetherapies.co.uk tel: 01604 879246

WARNING PULMONARY EMBOLISM

Please be aware that especially at this time of year. Always seek advice from your doctor for a health problem before using any supplements or before making any changes in prescribed medications

Eczema is an intensely itchy, inflammatory skin condition. It is usually found on the face, wrists and insides of elbows and knees. The skin becomes reddened, dry and thickened and it can weep and become crusted. Eczema is a very common condition, which affects 2.4% to 7% of the population [1]. Even though it can occur at any age, it is most common in infants and young children. Often eczema is the result of an allergic reaction, especially in children. Atopic eczema is a hereditary condition that develops in young infants with a family history of allergies or asthma.

What supplements may help to relieve the condition?

Research has indicated that eczema sufferers are unable to process fatty acids normally, which can lead to low levels or a deficiency of gamma-linoleic acid (GLA)[2]. GLA is found in Evening Primrose Oil, Starflower Oil and Blackcurrant Seed Oil. GLA helps to control the immune system and therefore allergic responses. The majority of research has shown that Evening Primrose Oil may help to overcome the inability to process GLA in eczema suffers [3,4,5].

Fish Oils are also an important source of essential fatty acids. One study in which eczema sufferers were given Fish Oils found that after twelve weeks, those using the Fish Oil showed improvement [6,7].

The B complex nutrients may play a supportive role in the control of eczema. Several of the B vitamins are needed to maintain healthy skin and proper circulation and deficiencies of some B vitamins, particularly Biotin and Inositol, have been linked to skin disorders [8].

Vitamin A and Zinc are two other important skin nutrients. Vitamin A is critical to the proper development and maintenance of the skin and Zinc aids healing and enhances immune function [8].

What herbs may help and relieve the condition?

Several herbal remedies have traditionally been used by people suffering from eczema. Liquorice root contains glycyrrhetinic acid; this has been associated with helping to reduce the symptoms of eczema, either used internally or topically.

There is good research to support the use of Burdock root in eczema because its primary active component (inulin) tends to correct the underlying defects in the inflammatory mechanism and immune system commonly found in eczema sufferers [1].

Sarsaparilla may be beneficial due to its anti-inflammatory actions. Traditionally in herbal folklore, Red Clover is considered to be beneficial for dealing with several different chronic conditions, especially those that affect the skin.

The role of diet and lifestyle

Eczema can often be caused by allergies. All major allergens should be identified and eliminated from the diet that will then help to control the eczema. A nutritionist can help to determine whether allergies are a cause of the eczema. Elimination of the allergen can result in significant improvement [9]. Researchers from one study estimated that eliminating cow’s milk, eggs, tomatoes artificial colours and food preservatives could help up to three-quarters of children suffering from eczema [10]. Eczema can also be made worse by stress and sufferers should try to avoid stressful situations. Herbs such as Kava Kava may be useful especially when stress is a problem.

Chemicals and detergents found in many household products can irritate the skin and worsen the eczema. Sufferers should try to use sensitive skin products when ever possible.

[1] Murray M and Pizzormo J. Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine. Begin a moderate exercise program several weeks before travel, gradually increasing the intensity as the day of departure approaches, and continue exercising while travelling. Walking, of course, is a great exercise that can be done almost anywhere.

Carry pertinent health data - details about pacemakers, for example - and be familiar with the drugs you are taking (the trade and generic names of the drug, and why you are taking it). This information should be packed in your carry-on luggage. Be sure to know how and where to check your pacemaker, where and when to check your blood for coagulation time, and be able to take your blood pressure, count your pulse rate, and recognize pulse irregularities.

Pace yourself at a level commensurate with your cardiac status. Take rest periods after long flights, being on the go from early morning until late at night is tiring. There are numerous tour companies that cater to individuals who want assistance with luggage, and who want to stay in one hotel for several days at a time.

Altitude

Generally, individuals with CVD who can walk briskly for about 300 feet or climb a flight of stairs without pain or shortness of breath should have no difficulty flying on commercial airliners (pressurised to about 8,000 feet) or participating in activities requiring minimal exertion at this moderate altitude. Well-controlled angina is not considered a problem at this altitude, even in those patients with well-controlled, concomitant pulmonary disease. Gradual acclimatisation to altitude is important for all travellers, and more so for individuals with CVD. This means avoiding strenuous exercise for the first few days, and participating in activities no more strenuous than at home for the whole stay at altitude. Gradual acclimatisation results in virtual restoration of sea-level cardiac performance after five days.

Although common medical wisdom advises individuals with CVD to avoid altitudes above 8,000 feet, studies and observations by experts in high altitude medicine show virtually no increase in the risk of acute cardiac ischemic events or a worsening of hypertension. A study of coronary heart disease at 10,000 feet showed that individuals with CVD have an earlier onset of angina compared to onset at sea level, but there is no impairment in their ability to acclimatise. While symptoms increased for the first few days, there is no evidence that exercise after acclimatisation was of greater risk to the heart than similar exercise performed at sea level.

If you have CVD and wish to participate in vigorous activities at high altitudes - skiing, trekking or climbing, for example - you should consult with your cardiologist and, perhaps, undergo cardiac screening tests to help detect hidden problems and gauge permissible safe altitudes and levels of exertion.

Heat

Your body acclimatises to heat somewhat more slowly and less completely than to altitude. As with altitude, it is best to minimise exertion for the first few days in a hot environment and to gradually increase the amount of activity. Air conditioning, even for a few hours a day, drinking lots of fluids, and wearing loose-fitting clothing are helpful.

Medications

It's wise not to travel for a week or two after starting a major new medication or after significant changes in dosage. This allows adverse effects to surface. Moreover, the effects of many medications commonly taken by travellers with CVD can be significantly altered by travel-related factors like altitude, heat, cold, and jet lag.

Cold

The human body does not adapt physiologically to cold as it does to altitude and heat. Individuals with CVD are at increased risk for cold-related problems. In temperate climates, individuals are at highest mortality and morbidity risk from CVD during in cold-weather months. Coping with cold requires preparedness - limiting the time of exposure to cold, keeping warm and dry, breathing through a scarf when the air is very cold, and being alert for cardiac - related symptoms.

Cruise Ships

Cruises are appropriate vacations for individuals with stable CVD. Passengers can be as active or inactive as they wish. The air is clean at sea, ships are air-conditioned, special diets are available, and most ships have lifts. Large ships are well equipped to handle cardiovascular emergencies. They have doctors on board, nearly all trained in emergency medicine. Ships carry defibrillators and ECGs; they also store cardiovascular-related medications, including heparin and thrombolytic drugs such as TPA and streptokinase. However, cruise ship medical facilities are infirmaries, not hospitals, and cannot supply the important follow-up care. Once patients are stabilised, they are immediately transferred to an appropriate facility on shore nearby, or back to the traveller’s home. Evacuation from ships is expensive so do think about carrying travel-related health insurance.

Pacemakers

Travellers with pacemakers can participate in virtually all travel and sports-related activities. Pacemakers activate the electromagnetic metal detectors at airports, but security guards are familiar with the devices and will perform a manual inspection on request. (Letters from doctors help.) Walking through a detector may cause a harmless skipped heartbeat, but wearers should not stop inside the detector; theoretically, this can result in many skipped beats. Do not enter a detector if the way is blocked on the other side.

In Case Problems Arise

Most travellers overlook a good resource for medical advice - calling their doctors back home. In many situations, telephone advice, even from abroad, negates the need to seek local medical help. Carrying telephone numbers saves time and hassle.

Excerpts from an article in Travelling Healthy: Health Advice for the Global Traveller. This may cause swelling, stiffness, joint pain and fever, and increases the odds that a blood clot could form in the veins. This blood clot could then break loose and travel to the lungs where it could constrict the flow of blood to the lungs, creating a pulmonary embolism that could result in severe health problems or even death. Embolisms can occur hours, or even days after the clot is formed.

While the risk is small for most healthy people, many airlines are issuing warnings to their passengers both on their websites and when long-haul tickets are purchased. In addition, some airline sites offer exercise routines that can be performed while seated to keep the blood flowing. The following tips will help keep you in circulation:

· Drink lots of water, and avoid beverages that dehydrate (coffee, tea, alcohol)
· Avoid salty food; snack instead on healthy foods to encourage good circulation
· Wear support socks that apply the proper amount of compression to the lower legs
· Get up and move around the aircraft cabin occasionally (aisle seats make this easier)
· Exercise your feet and legs four to five minutes every hour when seated.
· If your legs are not long enough for your feet to rest comfortably on the floor, use a footrest or prop your feet on your carry-on bag. This will reduce seat pressure on the back of your thighs that may inhibit circulation.
· If your legs are long, try to board at the first announcement to increase the odds that your carry-on luggage can be stowed in the overhead bin, allowing you to take advantage of all available leg space.
· For extra comfort and protection from swelling and DVT, alternating pressure seat cushions enhance circulation by shifting the pressure points where your body comes in contact with the airline seat.

Of course, if a traveller is currently suffering from circulation problems or has a history of blood clots, a physician should be consulted prior to flying.

How Reflexology Can Help You

Reflexology can help you in many ways:

· Improves circulation.

· Induces relaxation of mind and body.

· Removes toxins from the body by eliminating blockages from energy pathways, resulting in clearer skin, colour and tone.

· Increases energy flow.

· Helps to balance the physical and emotional body.

· Making the immune system stronger to resist disease.

· Increase self-awareness, motivation and self-appreciation.

Some Important Points on Reflexology

· Reflexology is the science or method of stimulating reflexes of the foot, hand or ear that correspond to each gland, organ and part of the body. Stimulation of these reflexes serve to relax and normalise all functions of the body in order to promote a natural balance and revitalisation.

· Research shows that Reflexology benefits patients’ health in both chronic and other ailments, it is no substitute for medical treatment and should be seen as complementary to any type of medical treatment. Extensive research on this subject has validated the positive effects of reflexology.

· Reflexology can relieve tension and promote relaxation. Medical studies show that over 75% of all health problems can be linked to tension and stress.

Reflexology is a Gentle form of Natural Healing

Reflexology is a gentle form of natural healing that involves massaging reflex areas in the feet. These reflexes correspond to all functions of the body. This method offers a means of restoring calm and balance to the body as a whole alleviating disorders caused by stress, illness, injury or disease.

Reflexology itself is no "cure all" but a means for the body to attain perfect balance of all its functions. Reflexology helps stimulate under active organs and lessen the activity of overactive organs; it also relieves stress and tension, which is after all the root of most disease.

Is It Poison?

Attributed to Sue Maunsell, Thermo-Auticular Therapy

Why is Aspartame so dangerous? When the temperature of Aspartame exceeds 86°F, the wood alcohol in Aspartame converts to formaldehyde it then becomes formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of ants. The methanol toxicity can mimic, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia and systemic lupus. I feel sure that many people are being diagnosed in error. Multiple sclerosis, nor any of the previously mentioned illnesses are not a death sentence, Methanol toxicity is! Systemic lupus has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially with Diet Coke or Pepsi drinkers. The sufferer usually does not know that Aspartame is the culprit. He or she continues to consume it; irritating the lupus to such a degree that it may become a life-threatening condition. Many therapists have seen patients with systemic lupus become asymptotic, once taken off diet foods, also in cases of those ‘diagnosed’ with Multiple Sclerosis, many of the symptoms disappear. We’ve seen many cases where vision disturbance or loss returned and hearing loss improved markedly; this also applies to cases of tinnitus. A thought to bear in mind – If you or someone you know suffers from dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint pain, unexplainable depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss you / they probably have Aspartame poisoning! BUT not all is lost; in the majority of cases it is reversible!

· Many food products are fortified with Aspartame, as a flavour enhancer.
· Diet drinks (diet Coke, Sprite, Pepsi …..) are NOT diet products! They are chemically altered, multiple sodium (salt) and Aspartame containing products that actually make you crave carbohydrates – it is far more likely to make you GAIN weight!
· Diet foods also contain formaldehyde, which stores in the fat cells, particularly in the hips and thighs. REMEMBER Formaldehyde is an absolute toxin and is used primarily to preserve “tissue specimens” in laboratories.
· Aspartame is especially dangerous for diabetics. Many patients diagnosed with retinopathy (disease of the retina resulting in impairment or loss of vision) in fact, had symptoms caused by Aspartame. Aspartame can cause the blood sugar to go out of control; the diabetic may suffer acute memory loss due to a neurotoxin being formed from aspartic acid and protein when not taken with other amino acids causing an imbalance. The treatment of Diabetes is about balance, aspartame passes the blood / brain barrier deteriorating the neurons of the brain, causing various levels of damage, depression, anger, panic attacks, rage even. The consumption of Aspartame causes this in Non Diabetics as well, BUT most diabetic recipes call for the use of ‘sugar substitutes’.
· Many children diagnosed with ADD or ADHD have a complete turn around when Aspartame is totally removed from the diet. Never mind the prescribed medication (Ritalin etc…) for behaviour modification. These drugs are / were probably never needed – most children that were prescribed them, were being poisoned on a daily basis by the very foods that were ‘Better for them than sugar’. BRING back sugar – STOP the use of Aspartame.
· Gulf War Syndrome – is there such an illness? Thousands (est. 500k) of pallets each containing ten thousand cans of diet Pepsi / Cola were consumed ….. I say no more.

Put your feet up and experience Agate Therapies!

Imagine a place where you have no choice but to put your feet up and relax!

Surrounded by gentle calming music and natural soothing colours, you are laid back comfortably and cosily tucked under a warm blanket while I begin massaging your feet. She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die.... they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple
questions:

S Ask the individual to SMILE.

T Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today)

R Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 999 immediately and describe the symptoms to the operator.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

PLEASE NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out
his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who reads this information tells 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

Mothers Day

My Mother used to say "you know when you are getting older, when the day ends before you do" So where has the time flown??

I can not believe it is so long since I last put a blog on this website. So what have I been doing? Well, I have been very busy with the Practice Agate Therapies, thanks to all my wonderful clients. I have also refurbished and rented out a cottage, which kept me pretty busy too. In between time I have attended many business seminars with Northampton University, just to keep me on my toes! AoR and FHT have us attending Post Grad courses to keep us updated with the latest in our chosen therapies. I also try to fit in some socialising with family and friends. Luckily it has been the Winter or how I would find time for the garden I don't know! But I have found time for my regular Reflexology therapy. I had a course of Thermo-Auricular Therapy (Hopi-Earcandles) after the flu at Christmas. I also have the occassional Swedish Massage. I am also very interested in a therapy I have been using, called Metamorphic Technique. Will tell you more about it in another blog.

So what have been doing with yourself?? See how water can help your particular condition. Amazing huh?

Your body needs an absolute minimum of 6-8 8ounce glasses of water per day. Alcohol, coffee, tea and caffine containing beverages don't count as water. The best times to drink water are one glass half hour before food and a similar amount 2.5 hours after each meal. Two more glasses should be taken around the heaviest meal or before going to bed. Adjusting water intake to mealtimes prevents the blood from becoming concentrated as a result of food intake. Ordinary tap water is recommended. If an open-top jug with water is left to stand in the fridge or the work yop the chlorine will evaporate.

Alzheimer's
The primary cause may be chronic dehydration of the body. In prolonged dehydration the brain cells begin to shrink. (pg36/37)

Arthritis Pain
The cartilage surface of bones in a joint contain much water - the lubricating property utilised allows the two opposing surfaces to glide freely over one another. In a well hydrated cartilage the rate of friction damage is minimal, in a dehydrated cartilage the rate of abrasive damage is increased. Actively growing blood cells in the bone marrow take prority over the cartilage for the available water that goes through the bone structure. The initial pain indicates that the joint is not fully prepared to endure pressure until it is fully hydrated.

Asthma and Allergies
Asthma and allergies are indicators that the body has resorted to an increase in production of histamine. It is recognised that asthmatics have an increase in histamine content of their lung tissue and that it is the histamine that regulates the bronchial muscle contraction. Since one of the sites for water loss through evaporation is in the lungs, bronchial constriction produced by histamine means less water evaporation during the act of breathing - a natural process to preserve the body's water. Histamine plays an important role in the defence systems in the body and normally remains unnoticed, but when a body is dehydrated the histamine activity becomes exaggerated. Concentrated blood reaching the lungs trigger histamine production. Salt is a natural antihistamine. People with allergies should begin to increase their salt intake. Salt is needed to break up the mucus in the lungs and render it watery. A pinch of salt on the toungue after drinking water fools the brin into thinking a lot of salt has arrived in the body and the brain begins to relax the bronchioles.(pp107_114)

Colitis/Constipation
One of the main functions of the large intestine is the process of taking water out of the excrements. When there is dehydration the process is slowed down and the contents squeezed - with further food more solid waste will be packed and increase the burden for passage and cause pain. With adequate water intake the abdominal pain will disappear.(pg37)

Dyspeptic Pain (heartburn, ulcers etc)
Dyspeptic pain is the most important signal for the human body - it denotes dehydration. Water passes immediately into the intestine, but within 30 minutesalmost the same amount of water is secreted into the stomach in the mucosa, ready to be used for food breakdown - digestion depends on the presence of copious amounts of water. Mucus consists of 98% water, sodium bicarbonate becomes trapped in the water layer and as the acid from the stomach tries to go through this protective layer it is neutralised. The balance needs to be maintained and water is the only substance that can do this. Antacids are designed to attack the acid in the stomach which upsets this balance. (p33)

Excess Body Weight
Sensation of thirst and hunger are generated simultaneously to indicate the brain's needs and we do not recognise the sensation of thirst and assume both are indicators of the urge to eat. We eat food even when the body should receive water. By drinking water before eating food it helps seperate the two sensations. Diet drinks containing caffine are diuretics and can cause weight gain. The water is forced from the body, the person drinks more and is never satisfied as the water doesn't stay in the body long enough - the person then assumes they are hungry. (pp93-106)

Headaches
Including migraine headaches, these may be prevented by regular intake of water.(p52)

Hiatus Hernia
You will need to read the book for a full explanation, but basically when we drink water a hormone called motilin is secreted which helps the internal contractions of the digestive system. When there is not enough water in the body the stomach contents are not allowed into the small intestine - too much acid is present which will cause damage - the valves constrict to stop progress and the acid is forced upwards. (p38) Dyspeptic pain is thist signal associated with chronic or severe dehydration of the human body.

Higher Blood Pressure
Cholesterol production in the cell membrane is part of the cell survival system and is a necessary substance, its excess denotes dehydration. Cholesterol is the agent that regulates permeability of the cell membrane to water and gives it the power to survive dehydration and drought. If we don't drink water before food the process of food digestion will take its toll on the cells of the body. Water will have to be poured on to the food in the stomach for processing, in the intestine more water is required to further process the food and then send them to the liver. In the liver more water is used. In the lungs water is evaporated. Dehydration may register itself halfway through a meal with dyspeptic pain. The solution is to drink water. Water is the most essential ingredient - if we give the necessary water to the body before we eat food all the battle against cholesterol formation in the blood vessels will be won.(pp93-116)

High Blood Pressure
Vessels of the body have been designed to cope with fluctuation of their blood volume by opening and closing different vessels, when the body's total fluid volume is decreased the main vessels also have to decrease their aperture. When we do not drink enough water some cells become dehydrated - 66% is taken from the water volume normally held inside the cells, 26% is taken from the volume outside the cells and 8% taken from the blood volume - the blood vessels have therefore got to decrease their aperture and some capilleries in less active areas are closed off. Excercise opens up capilleries to hold a greater volume of blood - the capillaries must remain open and full and offer no resisitance to blood circulation. Thereis much more information on this.(pp69-78)

Lower Back Pain
the spinal joints are dependenton the hydraulic properties of water stored in the disc core. Fully 75% of the weight of the upper part of the body is supported by the water volume that is stored in the disc core and 25% supported by the fibrous materials around the disc. To prevent back pain one needs to drink sufficient water. (p47)

Neck Pain
The weight of the head forces water out of the discs over a period of time - to bring back the same water the force of vacuum has to be created by doing simple head and neck exercises. Slowly and repeatedly bend the head and neck backwards as much as they will, keeping the neck extended for 30 seconds at a time - this brings water into the disc spaces.(p49)

Stress and Depression
A state of depression is said to exist in the brain, in confronting a stressful emotional problem finds it difficult to cope with the other attention-demanding actions at the same time. Some form of depression is natural in the process of development, but when for some time it gets beyondthis help may be required. The brain uses electrical energy that is generated by the water drive of the energy-generating pumps. With dehydration the level of energy generated in the brain is decreased. Many functions of the brain that depend on this type of energy become inefficient. We recognise this inadequacy of function and call it depression. This can lead to chronic fatigue syndrome. The chest cavity is used to its full limit, and the maximum benefit obtained. the rib muscles are actively used, as are those of the stomach and diaphram. This helps to prevent respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, etc. This is the BASIC NATURAL method of breathing.

The method is as follows:

1. Stand or sit erect, or lie flat. Exhale completely. Breath in slowly through the nostrils (never through the mouth), and fill with air. First the lower part of the lungs, which will cause the abdomen to expand. Then the middle and upper part, which will cause the chest to expand and the abdomen to contract a little.

2. Hold breath for a few seconds.

3. Breath out slowly through the nose, contracting stomach muscles to ensure proper exhalation. Practice this 4 or 5 times several times each day, and partiucularly when by the sea, or in the country, where the air is pure.

It is also very helpful to imagine yourself breathing in the power that makes the sea and sky blue, the trees and grass green, and the sun golden, because this is healing power and can be absorbed by full breath. When exhaling, imagine you are giving off all worry and trouble from your mind to be taken care of by a higher power. In this way, the full breath becomes not only a physical exercise but a mental and spiritual one as well.

Cholesterol - what is it? / what can we do?

Cholesterol is soft waxy substance found amongst the lipids(fats) of the blood stream in all body cells. It is an important part of a healthy body because it is used to form cell membranes, some hormones and other needed tissue. High level of cholesterol in the blood (hypercholestrolmia)is an indication of a high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases like heart attack and stroke. It also contributes to gallstones, impotence, mental impairment and hypertension. Blood flow is restricted by cholesterol in the vessels resulting in a reduced flow of blood (and oxygen) to the brain, heart and other organs.

What can be done to reduce Cholesterol?

Water: Excess Cholesterol denotes deydration. 2ltrs minimum per day, to rehydrate the body. Best times to drink 1 glass 1/2 hour before food and 1 glass 2.5 hrs after a meal. 2 more glasses around the heviest meal or before going to bed. Adjusting water intake to mealtimes prevents the blood becoming concentrated as a result of food intake. Ordinary tap water, left to stand - chlorine will evaporate.

Diet: Avoid fried foods, eat more fruit, vegetables and fibre based foods such as oats and wholegrain breads, rice, and soya beans. Use olive oil in the preparation of food. Limit the consumption of eggs to 4 per week. eat more grilled food or broiled fish and skinless chicken. Cut down on red meat, when you do choose lean cuts. Eat only low fat dairy products.

Excercise: in moderation

Nutrient suppliments which may be useful:

PLEASE NOTE: ALL SUPPLIMENTS TAKEN AS TABLET FORM (NOT FRUIT & VEGETABLES) MUST BE TAKEN ONLY AS ADVISED BY YOUR MEDICAL DOCTOR. This restricts joint movement, provokes pain, swelling and inflammation. Usually affects load bearing joints, but not always. Causes may be: overuse, injury, age, diet (one in high animal protein and fats creates excess acidity which can be associated with arthritis, calcium metabolism (calcium is not kept in solution but gets deposited in weak areas), toxins from the colon which settle in a weak joint causing inflammation. Circulation to the area is impeded, thus less waste is removed(cleansing)and cell renewal is affected (nutrician). Osteoarthritis is recognised by x-ray by narrowing of the joint space (due to loss of artilage) and the presence of ostephyte (projection of bone that occurs at the sites of cartilage degeneration). Psychologically osteoarthriris can reflect "armouring", or inflexibility.

Osteoporosis - is a gradual loss of bone density causing weakening and brittle bones. This occurs naturally with ageing but can occur earlier as a result of calcium deficiency or oral steroid drugs, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. Bone density is maintained by calcium whose metabolism needs calcitonin, produced by the parathyroid glands, and oestrogen: production of these hormones gradually declines with the menopause. Thus more common in women than men.

Water - The cartilage surface of bones in a joint contain much water - the lubricating property utilised allows the two opposing surfaces to glide freely over one another. In a well hydrated cartilage the rate of friction damage is minimal, in a dehydrated cartilage the rate of abrasive damage is increased. Actively growing blood cells in the bone marrow take priority over the cartilage for the available water that goes to the bone structure. The initial pain indicates that the joint is not fully prepared to endure pressure until it it is fully hydrated.

Calcium - Builds strong bones and hard teeth. Essential for blood clotting. Helps muscles and nerves to work. Activates certain enzymes. Foods - milk, bread, flour, cheese, green vegetables. Calcium level controlled by the parathyroid gland. Absorbtion and use requires: Vit D found in fish, liver, oily fish, eggs and milk - which in turn regulates the absorption of calcium in intestine, and calcium in bone marrow.

Thyroxine - Needs iodine present in blood stream. Iodine controls the rate at which we use body energy. Foods -fish, shellfish. Iodised table salt.

recommended - Wholefood diet. Apple cider vinegar with honey in the morning. Epsom salts in hot baths. Excercise - swimming.

Next time you are thirsty - pause for a second

Food for thought...
Water or coke?
We all know that water is important but I have never seen it written down like this before.

Water
1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half of the world's population.
2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak it is often mistaken for hunger.
3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a U-Washington study.
5. Lack of water, the No: 1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back & joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic maths, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likey to develop bladder cancer.

Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day?

Coke
1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries 2 gallons of coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in 2 days.
3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of coca-cola into the toilet bowl and let the coke sit for 1 hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in coke removes stains from vitreous china.
4. To remove rust spots from chrome bumpers:
Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of aluminium foil dipped in coke.
5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals:
Pour a can of coke over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
6. To loosten a rusty bolt:
Apply a cloth soaked in coke to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
7. To bake a moist ham:
Empty a can of coke into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminium foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.
8. To remove grease from clothes:
Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The coke will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield. This is very interesting. Try it for yourself.

For your Information
1. The active ingredient in coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will disolve a nail in about 4 days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from the bones and is a major contributor to the increase in osteoporosis.
2. To carry coke syrup (the concentrate)the truck must use the Hazardous Material place cards reserved for Highly corrosive materials.
3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would you like a glass of water or coke?
